The process

The propagation process is started in the Boereboom Invitro Cultures laboratory in the Netherlands, to produce the desired number of plants for an order. After this start, the tissue culture material is produced in Portugal at Boereboom Invitro Portugal scaled up to the desired number. The entire production process for an order takes about six months and takes place in this laboratory.

Tissue culture and rooting (Stage 3).

When the plants are rooted at the tissue culture stage Stage 3, they are transferred to the Netherlands. At a fellow propagation company, these plants are transplanted and placed on paper plugs. After rooting, the plants are hardened off, making them suitable as starting material for further cultivation.

Production of plugs

For plugs that are suitable for direct planting in the open ground, the plants are further grown for six weeks in a convertible greenhouse. Then the plugs are ready for planting out. In the spring, after transplanting, a technical pruning is carried out (technical cut) so that the plants can grow into a straight tree.

Plantable

At the nursery at van Oploo Garden Plants the plugs are potted up in the spring. Here the plants continue to grow, develop a solid root system and form healthy cuttings above ground. In the fall, the planting stock is cleaned and stored in a cold store. The following spring, the plants are removed from the cold store and pruned back. They are then ready for planting out in the open ground, where they grow into trees about 8-10 meters tall.
